Illness Abroad

Individuals, couples, and families spend most of the year dreaming of their holiday away and whether you choose to enjoy a staycation in the UK or you head off abroad you should still expect a level of cleanliness and safety that you would expect at home or at work. If you suffer an injury or contract an illness while on holiday in the UK then you can claim in exactly the same way you would if it had happened at home but if you contract an illness abroad then there are certain other rules that apply.

Obviously, your primary area of concentration should be on getting better, but even this can prove costly if your medical bills are not covered or you are unable to fly home, for example. You should consult a GP or head to the equivalent of Accident and Emergency in the nearest hospital to receive treatment.

Typically, those claims with the greatest chance of success when claiming compensation for an illness abroad are those where the suffered claims against a package holiday company. If you contract food poisoning from the hotel where you stay and this can be proven then you have a very strong case to claim personal injury compensation and you shouldn’t have too many problems following through with the case.

Report your illness or accident as soon as possible and ensure that you do so to your representative and also keep a copy of details for your own records. You may need to refer back to these when you return home. If there are any witnesses or fellow sufferers then you should attempt to get their names and addresses because this will prove helpful when progressing with your own complaint and your own case.
