Burns Injury
Burn injuries are extremely painful and while the most severe can lead to serious nerve damage or even death, some of the least severe can cause long term pain and scarring. If such a burn injury is caused at work and you can prove that it was down to the negligence of your employer then you could have a legitimate compensation claim on your hands. The amount that you will be able to claim will vary depending on a number of factors but you could be set for thousands of pounds in settlement.
Burns are usually classified according to the severity of the burn and how deep the burn has scarred the body. First degree burns only affect the top layer of skin and while they can be painful it is very unusual for any scarring or blistering of the skin to occur. Second degree burns affect multiple layers of the skin, will be considerably more painful, and may lead to long term scarring. Third degree burns or full thickness burns are very serious; they may lead to damage to the muscles, ligaments and tendons underneath the skin too. While fourth, fifth, and sixth degree burns are possible, these usually result in death and so are not usually referred to except in post mortem examinations.
It is down to your employer to ensure that their employees do not suffer from accidents at work and to ensure that you and your colleagues are kept safe from injuries including a burns injury. The risk of burns should be completely eliminated where possible and safety gear provided if the risk still exists. You should also have received appropriate health and safety training to ensure that you avoid potentially dangerous incidents. If your employer failed in any of these regards and their negligence led to a burns injury or other forms of accidents at work then you may be able to claim compensation.
